Interview Magazine's article "Ellen Burstyn Tells Christopher Meloni All of Her Secrets" torn and recast into a delicate, nostalgic reading experience that transcends the last seventy years on the silver screen. Ellen Burstyn's lifetime in Hollywood is one to be admired, not only for her captivating performances and accomplishments, but also for her philosophy on acting, life and truth. Throughout these spreads, I captured the integrity of Burstyn's spirit, integrity and ongoing career success through luxe and gentle, yet captivatingly tactile textural reference.
The typographic system is rooted in the visual language of movie scripts, referencing original script scans from The Exorcist as a primary source. A typewriter-style font with multiple variations mimics the format of old scriptbooks, while a flowing script font adds a layer of refinement, evoking generational handwriting.
Typography placement and sidebar treatments take cues from the look of old TV subtitles—overlapping content in a way that mirrors the imperfect experience of late-night reruns and worn-out VCR tapes. Subtle pink undertones nod to the nostalgic palette of a child's box TV set, adding a soft wash of memory to the visuals.
Rather than using traditional headers and footers, vertical elements guide the reader through the spreads, with titles, captions, and credits designed to feel delicate and intentional. The imagery resists horror tropes, focusing instead on Ellen Burstyn’s emotional depth and timeless presence. Materials like satin, velvet, and frosted glass helped shape a visual language that suggests softness, memory, and the weight of the classic.
